Football: Northern Illinois ended its historic season on New Year's Day with a 31-10 loss against the Florida State Seminoles in the Discover Orange Bowl. Jordan Lynch finished the game 15-for-41 passing for 176 yards, while Tommylee Lewis led NIU with five catches for 61 yards. The Huskies finished the season with a 12-2 record.

Men's Basketball: NIU dropped three close contests over the break. During their swing through the Pacific Northwest, the Huskies dropped a 75-48 contest to the hot-shooting Seattle Redhawks. Later in the week, NIU came just short of knocking off the Washington Huskies, losing 67-57 despite Abdel Nader's 18 points. A week later on their home floor, the Huskies pushed UMass to the brink, but lost 64-59 in the Convocation Center.

Women's Basketball: The Huskies went 2-3 during the holiday stretch that saw them play in three different states. Right before Christmas, NIU defeated Eastern Illinois, 48-38, in the Convocation Center before dropping a 66-61 overtime heartbreaker at UIC. At the Virginia Cavalier Classic the next weekend, the Huskies lost to Xavier, 66-54, then followed that up with a 69-38 thumping of Norfolk State. The team closed out their non-conference schedule with a 54-49 loss at Valparaiso.

Wrestling: Northern Illinois had plenty of highs and lows during the holiday season. The Huskies lost their MAC opener, 29-9, at defending regular season champion Kent State to start off the break. At the Midlands Championships, Derek Elmore and Andrew Morse each posted two wins to lead the team, while Matt Mougin and Shawn Fayette each grabbed one victory. The three-week stretch ended on a positive note Sunday, when the Huskies earned dual wins against Appalachian State and SIU Edwardsville.
