WHISPER CREEK GOLF CLUB

A first class program deserves top of the line facilities. The Northern Illinois University golf teams took a big step in the right direction during the summer of 2001 as they moved their home course from the Oak Club of Genoa to the renowned Whisper Creek Golf Club in Huntley.

Located in Del Webb’s Sun City, Whisper Creek has quickly earned a reputation for outstanding golf and championship-level course conditions since opening in July 2000. Designed by the team of Greg Nash and PGA Hall of Famer Billy Casper, the course features bent grass tees, greens and fairways that have been established through groves of mature oak trees and more than 5,000 strategically-placed pine and hardwood trees. Whisper Creek’s 240 acres is accented with rich bluegrass rough, native fescue grasses, protected wetland environments, bunkers with imported white sand and rock formations with cascading waterfalls.

The Huskies are also able to take advantage of the onsite state-of-the-art, double-sided practice and teaching center that features bentgrass, bluegrass and all-season hitting surfaces. Short game practice amenities include two putting greens, a chipping green and greenside and fairway sand bunkers.

Even though the course has only been open for a little more than two years, it has still been the site of many major tournaments. Last year Whisper Creek hosted the Illinois Open Qualifier, Prairie State Amateur Championship, Illinois PGA Pro-Senior Championship, CDGA Four Ball Stroke Play, IJGA Girls Tournament of Champions and the Weekly Challenge Golf Tour.

Word is quickly spreading on the new home of the Huskies. The course has received rave reviews from Chicagoland Golf, Golf Chicago Magazine and Golf Magazine. Whisper Creek was a finalist for Golf Digest’s “Best New Course” Award.

Away from the golf course, Whisper Creek offers the type of services that one might find at a high-end resort. Director of Golf Jim Karras—Illinois PGA 2001 Merchandiser of the Year for Public Courses—along with PGA Golf Professional Margie Arnold—former professional golfer on the Futures Tour—head a first class staff located in the 94,000 square foot Prairie Lodge which houses Whisper Creek’s professionally designed golf and gift shop that is fully stocked with the newest golf equipment and fashion trends for men, women and children.
