DeKALB, IL - For the first time since 1992, Northern Illinois University Athletics has announced a mid-year budget increase for each of its 17 sport programs. Funding for the increases was made possible through donations to the Huskie Athletic Scholarship Fund. In making the announcement, Associate Vice-President/Director of Athletics Jim Phillips attributed the increases to a team effort by Huskie donors and athletic department staff.
"The landscape of college athletics clearly shows that expenses such as scholarships, team travel, and recruiting continue to rise at a rate that is extremely challenging," Phillips said. "Therefore, increasing operational budgets to meet, as well as surpass, these expenses are a priority for our entire department.
"Thanks to the generous contributions of our dedicated donors with their support of the Huskie Athletic Scholarship Fund, we are able to make these budget increases to our sport programs for the first time in 15 years."
On February 7, the Huskie Athletic Scholarship Fund (HASF) will formally kick off its 2007 Membership Drive. The drive is scheduled to run through May 1, as the HASF is transitioning from anniversary date giving to a more structured calendar for its annual fund operations.
"The Huskie Athletic Scholarship Fund supplies our student-athletes with opportunities that we would otherwise not be able to provide them," said NIU women's basketball head coach Carol Owens. "Whether it means providing a better travel experience, eating an appropriate meal from a nutrition standpoint, or support with their academic efforts, the HASF is vital to our athletic programs."
As part of the spring membership drive, the HASF will announce Huskie Caravan dates later this spring that will take place throughout the Chicagoland region.
"With a more concentrated annual giving calendar and our increased efforts to spread the message of the Huskie Athletic Scholarship Fund, we fully expect opportunities for future sport program budget increases to be a reality," said Danny White, Assistant Athletics Director for Development and Director of the Huskie Athletic Scholarship Fund. "Our annual donations must continue to escalate if we are to provide that true world-class experience for all Huskie student-athletes."
