DeKALB, Ill. - NIU's women's tennis team is ne day away from starting up its spring season. On Friday, January 24, the Huskies will take on Lewis in a home match at the Vaughn Athletic Center in Aurora, Ill. The match is set to begin at noon.
The Huskies experience a shortened fall season this year when the final event of the fall, the NIU Invitational, was cancelled due to scheduling conflicts. This made the regional events the last items of the fall 2013 season.
At the Second Chance Regional, Haley Dekkinga, Cristina Alvarez, and Ilse Pacheco put forth strong showings, each finishing within the top three of their singles brackets. Arantza De La Torre and Nelle Youel competed at the women's tennis Midwest Regional, but they weren't able to advance far into doubles or singles play.
NIU competed at the Chicago State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee invitationals in the fall as well. In those events combined, de la Torre, Alvarez, Dekkinga, and Stephanie McDonald claimed flight victories in singles play. Youel and de la Torre also teamed up to take a doubles flight victory at Wisconsin.
This match against Lewis will be the first of the spring season for both teams. The Flyers are led by Head Coach Brett Bidel. Last year, he led the team to a 15-5 overall record. Lewis boasts the No. 4 doubles pairing in all of Division II women's tennis in Zsofia Lanstiak and Zsofia Kranczicki. The two Hunagary natives are also ranked in Division II singles play, as Lanstiak is No. 13 and Kranczicki is No. 41.
The match against Lewis is the start of weekly matches for the remainder of the spring semester. Next week, the Huskies will hit the road to face Wisconsin on Sunday, February 2 at 3:00 p.m.
