ANOTHER BUZZER BEATER AT THE CONVO
By Brett McWethy | Posted at 10:38 am on Friday, March 5, 2010
The fans in attendance undoubtedly walked away feeling entertained after NIU's 60-58 win over Toledo at the Convocation Center Thursday night. For the second-straight home game, the Huskies clinched a come-from-behind win with less than two seconds remaining, after Xavier Silas tipped-in a contested missed layup by Darion "Jake" Anderson with 1.2 seconds left on the clock.
Next up for the Huskies: a trip to Ypsilanti, Mich., to take on sixth-seeded Eastern Michigan, for the second time in seven days. Check out last night's coverage on NIUHuskies.com for a recap and updated MAC Tournament bracket. Just FYI, it is not complete; tonight's game between rivals Kent State and Akron, which can be seen at 6 p.m. on ESPN2, will decide the tiebreaker between Buffalo and Miami for the respective fourth and fifth seeds.
John Sahly from the DeKalb Daily Chronicle and Jay Taft of the Rockford Register Star were both in attendance for the game, where seniors Ante Dzepina and Najul Ervin were both recognized prior to their final home game. Thanks to our local media for all of their coverage throughout the season.
The mission of the NIU Athletic Department is to Develop Champions: In the Classroom, In Competition, and In Life. Former men's soccer player Fraser Gibson, a member of the 2006 MAC Championship team and an NIU graduate, has started his own business in his home of Scotland. The company, called United Sports USA helps young Scottish student-athletes pursue athletic scholarships at American universities. You can read the full story here, and check out United Sports USA's official web-site.
Former Huskie women's basketball standout Leslie Pottinger has been featured in the latest edition of "College Stars," a series in the Rockford Register-Star. You can read the complete story here.
A (delayed) congratulations to NIU women's basketball signee Jenna Thorp. She led Hinckley-Big Rock to its second consecutive 1A state title over the weekend. Our friends at the DeKalb Daily Chronicle covered the event like a Snuggie (or the less popular but equally effective Slanket). From the weekend coverage, here is the DC's championship game recap, and a story on what's next for H-BR girls hoops. Specific to Jenna, a feature on her growing up playing on a boys team, and a story on her game face.

John Sahly of the Daily Chronicle offered his take on NIU's football schedule released yesterday in this story. The Mid-American Conference's 2010 Football schedule as a whole created a buzz with its release, particularly with the non-conference portion. ESPN.com's Graham Watson breaks down the non-conference schedule of the MAC West as well as the MAC East and looks at some of the key conference match ups in her blog.
Women's hoops hits the road tonight to wrap up the MAC regular season at Western Michigan. Catch the official preview and notes here. Probably the highlight in all that business is that Kylie York's next bucket will make her the 25th member of the 1,000-Point Club. Also, there's a good chance Ebony Ellis will join the 16-member 600-rebound club in tonight's game. Ellis has 597 for her career. You can also check out the Northern Star's preview of the game here. You can hear the game live on 1360 WLBK-AM DeKalb or via the magic of the Internet and Huskie All-Access.
NIU Deputy Director of Athletics Robert Collins was featured in ESPN's vignette series "Realizing the Dream." You can check out the video above, thanks to the Worldwide Leader.
