DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois Athletics coaches and staff will meet and greet Huskie fans at five free events in the area this spring at the annual Huskie Athletic Support Fund (HASF) Spring Coaches' Caravans, held in partnership with the NIU Alumni Association.

NIU head coaches Jerry Kill (football) and Ricardo Patton (men's basketball) and members of their staffs, Huskie head coaches in other sports, and Northern Illinois Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher will headline the events to be held in St. Charles, Lombard, Rockford, Chicago and DeKalb/Sycamore. The first stop on the 2010 caravan tour is Thursday, May 13 from 5-7 p.m. at the Filling Station (300 W. Main St.) in St. Charles.

During the events, which are free and open to the public, fans will hear directly from Compher and the coaches in attendance, and will have a chance to ask questions as well as engage in one-on-one conversation. There will be drawings for door prizes, the opportunity to order football season tickets and to renew or join the HASF. Light snacks will be provided at all the caravan stops with beverages available for purchase. Once again in 2010, the NIU Alumni Association has joined forces with NIU Athletics to host the spring caravans and will have a presence at each event.

Following the initial event in St. Charles on May 13, the caravan makes a stop at a new location, Champps in Lombard (2301 Fountain Square Dr.) on Wednesday, May 19 from 5-7 p.m. The very next night, Thursday, May 20, the Huskies will be at Aldeen Golf Club (1900 Reid Farm Road) in Rockford beginning at 6:30 p.m. Prior to hearing from the coaches at the evening event, the Northern Illinois College of Business will hold its annual NIU Rockford Club Golf Outing that afternoon. Fans interested in playing golf should call 815-753-7068 or e-mail businessalumni@niu.edu.

One week later, on Thursday, May 27, Northern Illinois fans and supporters will gather at Goose Island (3535 N. Clark St.) in Wrigleyville at 4:30 p.m., or immediately following the conclusion of the 1:20 p.m. Cubs-Los Angeles Dodgers game at Wrigley Field.

The traditional "season finale" of the Huskie Athletics Spring Coaches Caravans, the DeKalb/Sycamore stop will take place on Thursday, June 3 at Johnny's Charhouse (1950 DeKalb Ave.) in Sycamore from 5-7 p.m. Always one of the most popular events on the tour with both fans and coaches, the NIU contingent will gather in the back room of the restaurant.

Again, admission to all of the Huskie Caravans is free. Representatives of the NIU football and men's basketball programs are expected at each event, although the coaches' schedules are subject to change. Coaches from several other programs will be in attendance at events on a rotating basis and as their schedules allow.

The Huskie Athletics Support Fund, the primary direct support organization for Northern Illinois Athletics, is currently in the middle of its annual fund drive, its largest fundraising effort of the year. Funds raised through the spring drive directly support NIU student-athletes in all 17 sports programs.
