Garrett Wolfe Headlines List of 60 2006-07 NIU Student-Athlete Grads
May 11, 2007 DeKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois All-American and all-time leading rusher Garrett Wolfe (Chicago/Holy Cross HS) headlines a list of 41 Huskie student-athletes who will earn their degrees from NIU on Saturday (May 12), bringing to 60 the total number of student-athletes to graduate during the 2006-07 school year. Wolfe will be joined by fellow Northern Illinois standouts like wrestling NCAA qualifiers Johnny Galloway and Danny Burk, Justin McGrane of men's soccer and women's basketball player Kristin Wiener at one of three graduation ceremonies to be held at the NIU Convocation Center on Saturday. Fifteen of Northern's 17 sports programs will have at least one graduate. The 2006-07 men's golf and men's tennis teams did not have any seniors on their rosters. "Graduation is the ultimate goal for each and every young person that comes into our program, and we are extremely proud to be able to call these 60 student-athletes graduates of Northern Illinois University," said NIU Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) Francine St. Clair. "Whether they are going on to a professional career in athletics, like Sam [Hurd], Garrett [Wolfe] and Doug [Free], or on to graduate school like [women's gymnast] Jody Yednock or on to begin a career in teaching, business or any other field, this NIU degree, as well as the experiences gained as Huskie student-athletes, will serve them well." Wolfe, a third-round selection by his hometown Chicago Bears in last month's NFL Draft, is one of 16 NIU football players to earn an undergraduate degree in 2006-07, along with fellow draftee Doug Free, a fourth-round choice by the Dallas Cowboys, and free agent signees Jake Nordin and Phil Horvath. Free, Nordin and Horvath, four of their senior teammates (Dustin Utschig, Adriel Hansbro, Alvah Hansbro, Brad Benson) and former Huskies A.J. Harris and Sam Hurd, all picked up their degrees in December. In all, 12 of NIU's 14 2006 football seniors have graduated. While the Huskie football team led the way with 16 graduates, eight members of the Northern Illinois baseball program earned degrees, although they will be unable to participate in graduation ceremonies due to an important Mid-American Conference series at Ball State this weekend. Current members of the NIU women's cross country/ track and field program - seven graduates in all - will also be in competition at the MAC Championships during graduation ceremonies. The 2006-07 grads list also includes six Huskie wrestlers, four members of the men's soccer program and three women's basketball players. Four Huskies - football safety Mark Reiter (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic HS) and tight end David Koronkiewicz (Goshen, Ind./Goshen HS), men's basketball forward Ben Rand (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle HS) and women's soccer forward Karen Enockson (St. Charles, Ill./East HS) - will earn their undergraduate degrees Saturday and return to compete for the Cardinal and Black next season while taking graduate courses.
