DeKALB, Ill. - Fifty-six Northern Illinois University student-athletes representing 16 of NIU's 17 sports programs, are set to earn their undergraduate degrees from NIU Saturday, bringing the total number of student-athlete graduates to 73 for 2010-11.

The Huskies' 2010-11 graduates list includes 24 members of the Northern Illinois football team, with seven players, including two members of the NIU starting offensive line and starting quarterback Chandler Harnish, returning for their senior seasons this fall. The NIU wrestling, women's golf and men's soccer teams each saw six members of their teams earn their undergraduate degrees this year. Six Huskie baseball players will leave the school with bachelor's degrees in hand after Saturday, even as their 2011 season continues on the field this weekend.

Northern Illinois teams with four 2010-11 graduates are men's basketball, women's track and field, women's soccer and volleyball while women's gymnastics and women's basketball each had three grads this academic year.

"Graduation is the ultimate `win' for us when it comes to developing champions in the classroom," said NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher. "To see so many of our student-athletes earn their undergraduate degrees this year is extremely gratifying to our coaches and staff, especially the academic counselors and learning specialists in our Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (S.A.A.S.S.) unit, who work so hard to guide our student-athletes to this goal."

Northern Illinois' 73 student-athlete graduates earned their degrees from six different colleges in 32 different majors. A majority - 44 - graduated from the NIU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in disciplines ranging from media studies and organizational communications to English, biology, political science and meteorology.

The Huskies' 11 College of Business grads were in six different majors. Men's soccer player Brad Bahr, who earned his degree in mechanical engineering, is the lone College of Engineering and Engineering Technology student-athlete graduate this year while volleyball's Meagan Schoenrock and Jessica Parmenter of women's golf were the only student-athletes to earn their degrees from the College of Visual and Performing Arts, in studio art and art history, respectively.

Northern Illinois University will hold commencement ceremonies at the NIU Convocation Center on Saturday.
