Nov. 17, 2009

DeKALB, Ill. - Debra Boughton, a certified public accountant and former student-athlete who has spent the last eight years directing the business office operations at Texas State University, has joined Northern Illinois Athletics as the Associate Athletic Director for Business Affairs, NIU Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher announced Tuesday.

Boughton's responsibilities at Northern Illinois will include directing all aspects of the business office operation, developing the department's annual budget and serving as the liaison between Huskie Athletics and the university's financial offices. As a member of Compher's executive team, she will have sport administrator duties, and the department's information technology unit will report to Boughton.

"We're very pleased to welcome Debra Boughton to Huskie Athletics," Compher said. "She brings extensive experience in intercollegiate athletics as well as a business mindset to our department. As a former student-athlete, she understands what we do and what we're trying to accomplish. She will add great perspective to our administrative team and will have a positive effect on many areas of our department."

In addition to supervising all budgetary and business operations at Texas State, Boughton initiated several cost-saving programs and contracts, served on the team for an $8.2 million baseball and softball stadium enhancement project, was the sport administrator for the TSU softball program and helped bring the athletic department reserve fund from a deficit situation to a $2 million dollar surplus. She began her tenure there as athletic business manager and was promoted to assistant athletic director in 2005.

Boughton, who earned bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting from Trinity University in Texas, where she was a varsity soccer player, also has a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University. She spent two years (1998-2000) as a staff auditor at accounting firm Arthur Andersen.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to come in and make some positive changes that will improve Huskie Athletics," Boughton said. "This is a dynamic and focused group of coaches and staff and I am going to enjoy working with them, as well as the individuals throughout campus."

A native of Austin, Texas, Boughton received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 1997. She began her duties at Northern Illinois on November 9.
