DEKALB, Ill. – Thirteen current and former Northern Illinois University student-athletes earned their NIU degrees during commencement ceremonies on campus this past weekend. In all, seven different sports were represented in the graduating group, including three members of the 2012 MAC Champion and Orange Bowl-bound Huskie football team.
Huskie football players Victor Jacques, Rashaan Melvin and Jason Schepler, part of the winningest senior class in Northern Illinois football history, graduated. Schepler, who was named a second team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America, earned his degree in electrical engineering, while Jacques and Melvin majored in organizational/corporate communications and sociology, respectively.
Three other NIU sports – men’s soccer, track & field and volleyball – had two graduates each, while baseball, softball and men’s tennis were represented with one apiece.
"Graduation is the top goal when we talk about developing champions in the classroom,” said NIU Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher. “I would like to offer my congratulations to the student-athletes for reaching this important milestone in their lives, while also offering thanks to the coaching staffs and faculty members, in addition to the academic advisers and learning specialists in the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services office, for their hard work in helping these individuals succeed."
The graduates represented nine different majors from nearly every college on campus. Organizational/corporate communications led the way with four graduates.
