KENNESAW, Ga. - Senior
Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France/Lycee Pierre Beghin) led the NIU men's golf team in the final round of the Pinetree Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon, shooting +3 in the round to jump 10 places in he final standings.
The Huskies maintained their 10th-place standing on the final tally sheet, carding a 316 in the final round to complete the tournament with a 934. Host Kennesaw State won the tournament as the 34th ranked team in the country shot a 280 (-8) to complete the tournament under par at -2 with a combined score of 862.
"It was a tough way to finish the fall for the Huskies. With the exception of Rick, as a team we never had command of the green speeds and could not build any momentum," said Director of Golf
Tom Porten. "It was good to see Rick bounce back from a tough day yesterday ad lead us with 75. Salvador, after a great start, struggled around the greens all afternoon and battled to stay in the top-30. We have a lot of work to do this winter in order to turn things around for the championship season."
Fillon's 73 was highlighted by 13 pars and one birdie, which he sunk on the 18th hole of play. NIU totaled seven birdies in the round, three of which occurred on the second hole of play for the Huskies, leaving NIU +2 through three holes as a team.
The Huskies will return to competition in February, heading to Goodyear, Ariz., for the Loyola (Md.) Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club Feb. 25-26. NIU will play in seven tournaments this spring, including the MAC Championship at Virtues Golf Course in Nashport, Ohio April 28-30.
