NIU Gymnastics Announces Three Recruits for the 2017-18 Season

DeKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University gymnastics team signed three gymnasts during the early recruiting season looking to compete in all four events for the Huskies.
 
Mia Lord (McCordsville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern), Zoie Schroeder (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) and Gabby Welch (Greenbrier, Tenn./Aaron Academy) committed to NIU with Coach Morreale hoping for the three ladies to be contenders in all four events.
 
"I'm very excited to announce these three coming in," said NIU head coach Sam Morreale. "They all committed a while ago, so we've been very very anxiously waiting their arrival. All three are going to be able to come in and help us to continue on with our goals. All three are going to battle and compete for spots."
 
The gymnast's accomplishments are below:

Mia Lord
McCordsville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern High School/DeVeau's School of Gymnastics
 
  • Trained at DeVeau's School of Gymnastics under Coach Kim Gibson, Coach Don Gibson and Coach Tom Strange.
  • Achieved competing at Level-10 and qualified for Nationals as a freshman in 2014.
  • Recorded second place at State as an all-around competitor to qualify for Nationals where she earn 26th all-around during sophomore season.
  • Placed second on vault and fifth all-around as a junior at Regionals during the 2016 season, which qualified her for Nationals where she earned 12th on bean and 24th all-around.
 
Morreale on Lord: "She's a fun gymnast to watch and should make an immediate impact on making the Huskies better. She's a power athlete on vault and floor."

Zoie Schroeder
Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park High School/Twin City Twisters
 
  • Trained at Twin City Twisters gym and was coached by Mike Hunger and Sami Wozney.
  • Started competing as a Level-10 gymnast during the 2014 season.
  • Qualified for Regionals during the 2015 season where she placed second on bars, beam and all-around as well as fourth on floor.
  • Placed 22nd at Nationals as an all-around competitor.
  • Awarded Academic Letter as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
 
Morreale on Schroeder: "She's a solid all-around gymnast who will make us better on all four events."

Gabby Welch
Greenbrier, Tenn./Aaron Academy/Clarksville Elite Gymnastics Center
 
  • Trained at Clarksville Elite Gymnastics Center under coaches Larry Corrigan and Shenette Gavi.
  • Competed as a Level-10 gymnast since 2011.
  • Placed first to become champion on beam at 2014 Regionals.
  • Champion on bars and vault as well as all-around at the 2015 State Championships.
  • Earned second place on vault and all-around, third on floor and fourth on bars at 2016 State Championship.
  • Gym Captain during 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons as well as Team MVP during her 2015-16 season.
 
Morreale on Welch: "Gabby sat out and trained this year, so she will bring a maturity level with her. She's extremely talented on beam, but will be another athlete who makes us better on all four events."
