Swan Announces Men’s Soccer Staff

DEKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois University men's soccer head coach Ryan Swan finalized his staff, adding Andrew Bordelon as an assistant coach while promoting Zac Brown from volunteer assistant to a full-time position.

"I am delighted that Zac and Andrew are part of the Huskie soccer program," said Swan. "Both understand the expectations here at Northern Illinois University and are committed to moving the program forward. Zac and Andrew have established themselves as top quality collegiate coaches and I could not be happier about the prospect of working with them over the coming years.

"Zac did a fantastic job of keeping things together as I transitioned into my role as head coach and can take a great deal of the credit for our incoming class. Furthermore, he has a great understanding of the soccer landscape both in the Chicagoland area and in the MAC. Zac's primary coaching responsibility will be with our goalkeepers, but he will continue to be an integral part of our recruiting team."

Brown joined the NIU staff as a volunteer in January of 2016, working with the Huskie goalkeepers. A native of Saint Paul, Minn., Brown came to NIU following a season at Lake Forest College in 2015, where he helped the Foresters to a 14-3-2 record and a Midwest Conference crown.

"I'm excited about things going forward here at NIU," said Brown. "The future is looking very bright under Coach Swan. Having a guy with such a proven track record, along with our talented players, I think things are looking very bright."

In addition to his time at Lake Forest, Brown has worked with the Illinois Olympic Development Program (ODP), U.S. Soccer Training Center and Big Cat Goalkeeping, while also serving as Director of Coaching for Northern Illinois FC.

Brown played collegiately at the University of Richmond and Loyola University (Chicago). He earned his bachelor's degree with honors in political science from Loyola in 2014 and his master's degree in political science from Loyola in 2015.

"When I was hired at NIU, finding a coach that shared my vision for coaching at the collegiate level became one of my top priorities," said Swan. "I have known Andrew for many years and knew that he would be an ideal addition. He is a tireless recruiter, has demonstrated great success as a head coach and is an innovative coach on the training ground. Having worked with Andrew in the past, I have no doubt that he can help us achieve our goals.

Bordelon comes to NIU following one season as head coach at Division III Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md. Prior to his one season at Stevenson, Bordelon served as the head coach at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., for three seasons. Bordelon led Westminster to a 41-20-2 overall record in three seasons, which included three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances and three Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) championships.

"I am very excited about coming to Northern Illinois University and joining a program that has a lot of potential and is in a great conference," said Bordelon. "It is great to be reunited with Coach Swan, someone that I have both played for and worked for; he is an outstanding coach and I am looking forward to working with him again at NIU."

In 2013, Bordelon guided Westminster to a 13-9-1 overall record and the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, he was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Central Region Coach of the Year. During his final season at Westminster in 2015, Bordelon led the Blue Jays to a 17-3 record while earning SLIAC Coach of the Year honors as Westminster finished the season ranked second nationally with 82 goals scored.

Bordelon began his coaching career as an assistant coach for Swan at Drury University in Springfield, Mo., where he also played and was a four-year starter from 2006-09 and ranks fourth in school history in career assists. Bordelon earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Drury in 2010 and his master's in secondary education from Drury in 2012.

NIU continues its spring slate this Saturday, April 15, as it hosts the University of Indianapolis at 1 p.m., at the NIU Soccer Complex.
