WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Shooting its best round of the tournament, the NIU men's golf team shot +3 (291) in the final round of the Boilermaker Invitational, improving its best score from yesterday by eight strokes. However, the Huskies refinement wasn't enough as they placed ninth in the tournament.
"We had our chances to move up today, but we could not get our tee shots in the fairway enough to make the necessary birdies to improve our position," said Director of Golf
Tom Porten. "The golf course was perfect for scoring as the winds were much calmer than yesterday. We started strong with Thomas and Matt making birdies early and then the rest followed suit. Beating our conference schools and two Big Ten ranked teams in Michigan and Michigan State was also big."
Charlie Cameron was the top-finisher for the Huskies, tying for 26th overall at +6. The senior captain shot +2 in the round. NIU finished ahead of both No. 48 Michigan and No. 56 Michigan State in the standings.
Sophomores
Matt Cholod and
Thomas DeMarco were the Northern Illinois University's top contributors in the round, carding a 71 and 72, respectively. Both finished in the top-40 with DeMarco taking 37th and Cholod tying for 40th at +9.
Though he played unattached from the NIU lineup,
Paul Schlimm posted the second-best finish by a Huskie in the tournament, tying for 30th. Schlimm followed up his 72 in yesterday's first round with a 72 in the final round to card a 223 (+7).
The Huskies will close the regular season next week, playing at Ohio State's prestigious Scarlet Course for the Robert Keppler Classic, starting on Saturday, April 22.
