Men's Tennis

NIU Tops Green Bay to Open Weekend

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – After dropping the doubles point, the Northern Illinois University men's tennis team rebounded to win five of six singles matches as they bettered Green Bay, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Huskies improve to 7-2 on the season.

"The way we started today was the worst all season," said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. "Doubles wasn't very good, we did nothing right, Green Bay came out and punched us and we didn't fight back. At intermission we got some things straightened out and we were a different team. We played aggressive, attacked and played with great energy the way we should play from start-to-finish.

"Tomorrow will be big, Marquette is good, so are we, the tougher team will win. To play in this type of match on the road will be awesome for us."

A 6-4 win at number two and a 6-1 victory at number three gave Green Bay the doubles point at the Phoenix took the early lead.

In the singles, senior Louis-Philippe Hamel (Drummondville, Quebec, Canada) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tony Leto at number six. At number four, sophomore Bor Schweiger Muzar (Crnomelj, Slovenia/Gimnm) earned a comfortable, 6-2, 6-3, win over Miles McDowall.

After taking the first set, 6-3, over Florian Kraenzler at number one, senior Eric Marbach (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) outlasted Kraenzler in the second set, 7-5, to win in straights.

At three and five, the Huskies earned close opening set wins on their way to two more straight-sets victories. Senior Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) topped Charlie Croxford at number three, 7-6, 6-4, while senior Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) bettered Ivan Radomirovic at number five, 7-5, 6-3.

NIU will finish the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 11, when they face Marquette at 2 p.m., in Milwaukee.
