There is a special atmosphere on gameday at Northern Illinois University. It's students supporting their classmates, traditions and teamwork, and old friends reuniting and reminiscing. It's a community rallying around its university, and bringing people together for a common goal: cheering the Huskies on to victory. Businesses and groups from DeKalb to Chicago fill the stadium to provide an atmosphere that was rated by one magazine as the best in the Mid-American Conference. The parking lots fill with tailgaters hours before kickoff, the Huskie Marching Band ignites the crowd and the cheerleaders stream onto the field. Football at NIU is not just a game-it's an event. The crowd roars when the Cardinal and Black team charges out of the Yordon Center to take the field. As the stadium fills, thundersticks pound and the band plays, the fans scream in anticipation and chant for every NIU first down. When the clock hits 0:00 and the Huskies are victorious, fans celebrate the triumph the rest of the night and savor the win for the next seven days.
