- One of the most successful programs in the Mid-American Conference the last decade, Northern Illinois was one of only seven teams to win 6 or more games in each of their last 4 seasons and one of only eleven schools to win 11 plus wins in 2011.
- Northern Illinois has made a habit of playing beyond its regular-season schedule. With four straight bowl appearances, NIU has made more postseason appearances since 2004 than any other school in the MAC.
- The Huskies have made six bowl appearances in the last seven years, appearing in four consecutive years of bowl games - 2009 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, LA, the 2010 International Bowl in Toronto, Canada, the 2011 Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, ID, and the 2012 GoDaddy.com Bowl in Mobile, AL.
- NIU is the only school to claim the MAC's prestigious Vern Smith Leadership Award given by league coaches to the conference's most valuable player five of the last 6 years. Larry English, the No. 16 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers, was the first defensive player, the first Huskie, and only the fourth player ever to win the award in back-to-back seasons.
