There is no minimum skill requirement to try-out for NIU Cheerleading. The minimum skill to make the team will be determined by the level of talent at the try-out. All individuals are encouraged to try-out. A cheerleader with a lower level of tumbling or stunting should be prepared to show a higher level of other skills. Any cheerleader that can execute a double-down from a single leg extended stunt, a standing back tuck, or a full twisting layout on the cheer floor will advance to the second round of try-outs. Cheerleaders should expect to display their level of running and standing tumbling, stunting skills, jumps, motions and dance. Cheerleaders should expect to show a desire to learn and develop new skills.
Any individual trying out for Northern Cheerleading must provide a copy of the front and back of their current health insurance card at registration on Friday or Saturday. A try-out fee of $20, the try-out application and try-out waiver are also due at the time of registration.
NIU Cheerleaders cheer for all football games and Men's and Women's basketball games. NIU Cheerleaders practice 3 days per week. In addition to practice and games, cheerleaders will be responsible for additional appearances as necessary.
Competition will be determined on a year by year basis. One or two teams may have the opportunity to travel to a national competition on the condition that the appropriate funds have been raised by the team(s).
All team money must be raised through donations or fundraising opportunities. NIU Cheerleaders are expected to fundraise and solicit donations as deemed necessary by the coaches. NIU Cheerleaders will run in the black with no monies being spent without money in the account. Cheerleaders should expect to pay for shoes, poms, practice shirts and shorts. These items will cost approximately $300. The $300 will cover the following:
