Huskie Student-Athletes Make It Eight Straight 3.0 Semesters
June 1, 2009 DeKALB, Ill. - For the eighth consecutive semester, Northern Illinois student-athletes have combined to post a cumulative grade point average above 3.0 as the 2009 spring term GPA came in at 3.025, NIU Senior Associate Athletic Director Francine St. Clair announced Monday. In all, eight of 16 Northern Illinois teams compiled a cumulative 3.0 grade point average or above while 215 student-athletes achieved that mark individually. Northern Illinois' string of 3.0 semesters dates back to the fall of 2005 with a 3.008 GPA and the Huskies cumulative mark has ranged from 3.02 to 3.07 over the succeeding seven terms. In addition to the string of eight straight 3.0 semesters, NIU has reached the mark in 11 of the last 13 semesters dating back to Spring 2003. NIU Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher congratulated the student-athletes on the latest in what has become a lengthy list of positive academic achievements. "Once again, Huskie student-athletes have risen to the challenge in the classroom to continue this amazing record of academic success," Compher said. "Congratulations go to the students, as well as to our academic support staff and coaches. Eight straight semesters with a GPA above 3.0 is an accomplishment in which all Huskie fans can take pride." The battle for the top spot among Huskie teams in terms of both cumulative GPA and the spring semester GPA was hotly-contested again this spring. In the end, Ray Gooden's NIU volleyball team came out on top in the race for the best program cumulative grade point average with a 3.324 mark, narrowly edging the gymnastics team, which checked in at 3.320. Women's cross country was not far behind at 3.238, followed by softball (3.191), women's track and field (3.174) and women's basketball (3.152). Women's soccer (3.148) and women's golf (3.147) round out the list of teams which finished above 3.0 for the spring semester. Men's soccer owns the top cumulative grade point average among Huskie men's teams, narrowly missing the 3.0 threshold with a 2.964, while the Northern Illinois football team earned its second-highest cumulative grade point average in school history with a 2.893 mark. For the spring semester, gymnastics and women's golf finished one-two in the GPA race with gymnastics earning the top spot by a slim .001 margin, 3.355-3.354. Women's soccer had the third-highest semester mark at 3.257, followed by volleyball (3.231) and women's cross country (3.202). Individually, 11 NIU student-athletes finished the semester with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average: Jennene Anthony, Jenner Sio, Denisse Valladeres and Kaylee Walters (women's track & field), Kristin Hoffman and Allison McGlaughlin (volleyball), Kyle Knotek (men's soccer), Anne Wyer (women's soccer), Ryan Morris (football), Morgan Wigboldy (gymnastics) and Will McDermott (wrestling). They joined 204 of their fellow student-athletes above the 3.0 mark, including 48 members of the football team, 24 women's track and field athletes and 18 women's soccer players. Nine teams put at least 12 individuals on the 3.0 list. "The spring semester is always challenging for our student-athletes with nearly every sport in season," St. Clair said, "but our students once again persevered and I am very proud of their efforts this year. We have firmly established the cumulative 3.0 grade point average as our standard for Northern Illinois Athletics and will continue to work very hard to keep this current streak going as we enter the 2009-10 academic year."
