NIU Baseball Preview with coach Ed Mathey

NIUHuskies.com presents the 2012 baseball season preview with Head Baseball Coach Ed Mathey, now in his 10th season at Northern Illinois. The Huskies return seven starters and two starting pitchers in 2012, along with four All-MAC picks, two all-region and a freshman All-American. To boast, NIU also has a pitcher on the preseason stopper of the year watchlist.

2011: Appeared in 10 games on the mound in freshman season ... Made his season debut March 19 at Southern Illinois ... Posted a 4.09 earned run average in relief duty ... Recorded nine strikeouts and nine walks in 11 innings pitched ... Against conference foe Bowling Green (March 25), struck out three and allowed only one hit in 1.2 innings.

High School: Three-time varsity letterman at St. Rita of Cascia H.S. ... Batted .386 with 56 RBIs, 28 runs, 10 doubles and six home runs ... Also pitched 96.3 innings with a 2.86 ERA and 76 strikeouts with 11-3 record over 14 games as a senior ... helped St. Rita to a runner-up finish in the state championship with a 31-9 record ... Named to second team All-Chicago Catholic League Blue for his junior season ... Hit at a .440 clip with 20 runs, three home runs and 21 RBI in 38 games, and was 5-0, with 39 strikeouts, one save, a 3.87 ERA in 38 innings over 13 games on the mound as part of the Illinois class 4A state runner-up team in 2009 that went 35-7, 11-3 in league play ... As a sophomore, logged 54.1 innings over 13 games, posting a 7-2 mark with three complete games, 65 strikeouts and a 3.09 ERA for a 29-8, 9-5 Mustangs squad.
