NIUHuskies.com presents the 2012 baseball season preview with Head Baseball Coach Ed Mathey, now in his 10th season at Northern Illinois. The Huskies return seven starters and two starting pitchers in 2012, along with four All-MAC picks, two all-region and a freshman All-American. To boast, NIU also has a pitcher on the preseason stopper of the year watchlist.
2011: Made 41 starts in 47 total appearances ... Primarily played second base ... Made two starts in the outfield ... Recorded 34 hits during the season for a .246 batting average ... Walked 25 times and had an on-base percentage of .374 ... Tied for team lead in sacrifice flies, five ... Drove in 20 runs and scored 24 ... Also hit five doubles and three triples ... Had eight multi-hit games ... Recorded 61 putouts in the field and 107 assists ... Went 2-for-5 and recorded three RBI in the Huskies 15-14 victory over Illinois (March 18) ... Also batted in three runs against Ohio on one hit and three walks in Northern Illinois' 19-10 win (April 17) ... Recorded three hits for the Huskies during the MAC Tournament, including one double ... Had a season-high four putouts versus UC Riverside at the Coca Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz. (March 5) ... Had a five-game hitting streak May 6-14.
2010: Knocked in the Huskies' lone run at Arizona State (2/20) ... Provided the Huskies only mulit-hit performance and scored in the first game of a doubleheader at Southern Illinois (3/20) ... Singled twice and drove in a pair in the second game at Southern Illinois (3/20) ... Rapped two singles and scored vs. Milwaukee (3/24) ... Dropped in the game-winning hit at Bowling Green (3/26) ... Smashed an RBI double vs. Buffalo (4/3) ... Tripled, scored, and knocked in a run at Illinois State (4/6) ... Collected a pair of singles vs. Ohio (4/17) ... Recorded three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two at Iowa (4/2) ... Enjoyed a two-hit afternoon and scored a run vs. Central Michigan (4/30) ... Notched a three-hit performance and stole his second base of the year vs. Eastern Michigan (5/7) ... Continued to hammer Eagles pitching with his first collegiate longball vs. Eastern Michigan (5/8) ... Ranked fifth on the team in RBIs (20).
2009: Hit .227 with 27 hits, 16 runs, eight RBI, four doubles and 24 walks in 44 games, 33 starts ... Made Huskie debut against Mississippi State (2/20), posting three walks and a hit in four plate appearances ... Scored twice and knocked in two more vs. SIU (3/6) ... Had a 2-for-4 day with a run at Saint Louis (3/10) ... Knocked in a run on a base hit and scored a run at Southeast Missouri (3/15) ... Recorded a season-high three hits in a win vs. Buffalo (3/21) ... Drove in a pair of runs vs. Bowling Green (3/27) ... Went 2-for-3 with an RBI vs. Toledo (4/18) ... Finished third on the team in walks (24).
High School: Earned all-state honors and was a two-time first team all-conference and all-area selection ... Two-time team captain ...
