The NIU baseball program has had many a great leaders in the dugout. Young men that have led vocally, through character and with their performance on the field. But it's not every season you have a young man that brings all three to the diamond every game at Ralph McKinzie Field. The Huskies have one in 2015. His name is Gavin.

2015 SEASON (SOPHOMORE): •Appeared in 29 games, starting 17 at second base •Stepped up to the plate 67 times, connecting 16 timesand finishing the season with a .239 batting average, as well as a .297 on base average •Helped the Huskies with seven runs as well as a homerun of his own on his lone hit in the May 16 contest versus Ball State •Set career high five RBI vs. Bradley (Apr. 15)
2014 SEASON (FRESHMAN): • Appeared in 42 games, starting 33 in the infield and outfield • Batted .203 with a .269 OBP; drove in eight runs with 13 runs scored, two doubles and a homer • Most hits (27), runs (13) and RBI (8) amongst NIU freshmen • Became the third freshman since 2007 (Jordin Hood, 2007; Jeff Zimmerman, 2011) to record 10-game hitting streak in a season (March 23-April 12); second-longest for NIU on the year • Hit .372 (16-for-43) during 10-game streak with two doubles, four runs and his first career home run versus Toledo (April 6) • Was a season-best 4-for-5 at the plate with one run and a double against Illinois State (April 8) • Scored two runs in back-to-back efforts at No. 9 Cal Poly (March 13) and against UIC (March 18) • Drove in two runs against Valparaiso with a 3-for-6 game, stealing two bases (April 2) • Made collegiate debut against Minnesota in the season-opener (Feb. 14) • Recorded first hit against Missouri State, driving in a run to aid in an eight run, ninth inning rally against the Bear (Feb. 21) • Reached base in all-four plate appearances against UW-Milwaukee, going 1-for-1 with a hit by pitch, two walks, a stolen base and a run (April 23)
GRAYSLAKE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL: • Team captain during senior year • Three year varsity letter winner • Awarded hitter of the year in 2013 • Named to the Fox Valley Coaches First Team his junior and senior years • Competed in 29 games in his final season, recording four home runs, 43 hits, with a 37 RBI and .478 batting average • Helped his team to the very first Conference championship in the school's history
PERSONAL/MISCELLANEOUS: • Son of Kim and Allan Russell • Honor roll student in junior and senior season • Member of the Public Service Practicum • Recorded 50 plus hours of community service during senior year • Enjoys fresh and salt water fishing • Intends on majoring in business • Played for the Kenosha Indians AAU baseball team in his summers • Admires Derek Jeter for "his ability on the field and contributions off the field"
