NIU Fall Baseball Podcast

The first ever fall update from Head Coach Ed Mathey on the NIU Baseball Podcast.

After two seasons with the Huskies as a utility player and one more season an undergraduate assistant, Connor Duckhorn joins Ed Mathey's coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2015 season.

In his first season working with the program, Duckhorn helped coach the infield while assisting all players in their individual workouts. The Darien, Illinois product worked closely with first baseman/outfielder Brandon Mallder, who improved his batting average 79 points and became one of NIU's toughest outs in the last quarter of the season. Mallder finished the month of May of the season 15-for-31 (.484) with two doubles, two home runs, four runs, three walks and only three strikeouts for an on-base plus slugging mark of 1.271 after working with Duckhorn.

Duckhorn transferred to Northern Illinois in the fall of 2011 after playing two seasons at Cowley County College in Kansas, where he led the Jayhawk Conference with a .398 batting average in his freshman season. In his two seasons with the Huskies, Duckhorn made 82 career appearances with 67 career starts as an infielder, outfielder, designated hitter and pitcher.

"Connor always had a good approach to the game as a player. He worked hard on the field to improve his game at NIU," said Mathey, "with his mind for the game, combined with other necessary attributes he possesses, Ducky has the ability to be a good coach should he choose to pursue a career in the game."
