NIUHuskies.com presents the 2012 baseball season preview with Head Baseball Coach Ed Mathey, now in his 10th season at Northern Illinois. The Huskies return seven starters and two starting pitchers in 2012, along with four All-MAC picks, two all-region and a freshman All-American. To boast, NIU also has a pitcher on the preseason stopper of the year watchlist.
2011: Made 30 appearances, starting 27 of those contests ... Hit .211 with 19 hits, including two homeruns, 10 RBI and nine runs ... Drew 12 walks ... Second on the team with 177 putouts behind the plate ... Recorded multi-hit games against Ohio on April 15 and 17 ... combined 4-for-9 at the plate, with one home run, six RBI and two doubles ... Had 13 putouts, a season-high, against Bowling Green (March 26) and Ball State (May 14) ... Knocked in three runs with one home run at Central Michigan (April 29) ... Drew two walks versus Chicago State, scoring one run (March 29) ... Recorded four sacrifice hits in 2011.
2010: Hit a fourth-inning homer at CSU Bakersfield (3/6) ... Went 3-for-4, homered, and drove in two at UC Santa Barbara (3/13) ... Singled in the eighth and came around to score the game-winning run at Bowling Green (3/26) ... Contributed a pair of hits at Bowling Green (3/27) ... Made his 2010 pitching debut with a scoreless frame of relief at Bradley (3/31) ... Stole his only base of the season and hit two singles vs. Buffalo (4/2) ... Made a situational relief appearance and struck out the only batter he faced at Illinois State (4/6) ... Recorded an RBI single at Miami (4/11) ... Smashed a double and scored vs. Ohio (4/16) ... Drove in two runs vs. Bradley (4/28) ... Enjoyed a 2-for-4 afternoon vs. Central Michigan (5/1) ... Erupted for a perfect four-for-four game, raising his average 30 points, vs. Eastern Michigan (5/7) ... Led NIU to a late-season victory with a home run, two singles, and three RBI vs. Western Michigan (5/20) ... Tied for third on the team in home runs (3) and ranked fifth in slugging percentage (.371).
2009: Posted a .231 average with four runs, six hits, six RBI, a double and four walks in 18 games, eight starts ... Was hit by pitch in his collegiate debut plate appearance vs. North Florida (2/22) ... Slapped a two-run single in his first official at-bat vs. Oregon State (2/26) ... Made his first collegiate start, at catcher, at Southeast Missouri (3/14) ... Recorded a 2-for-3 day at the plate and threw out his first collegiate base stealer at Northwestern (4/8) ... Tallied a hit, a run, an RBI, and a walk vs. Chicago State (4/15) ... Drove in one of the Huskies' 16 runs at Central Michigan (5/1).
High School: Rated as the No. 3 defensive catcher in Illinois by Prep Baseball Report ... Helped team capture three consecutive conference titles ... Hit .330 with 23 hits, 15 RBI and one home run as junior ... Committed only one error in 200 chances for a .997 fielding percentage during his junior season ...
