NIU Baseball Preview with coach Ed Mathey

NIUHuskies.com presents the 2012 baseball season preview with Head Baseball Coach Ed Mathey, now in his 10th season at Northern Illinois. The Huskies return seven starters and two starting pitchers in 2012, along with four All-MAC picks, two all-region and a freshman All-American. To boast, NIU also has a pitcher on the preseason stopper of the year watchlist.

2011: Was one of 42 pitchers named to National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Midseason Stopper of the Year watch list ... Made 24 relief appearances during the 2011 season ... Teams top-closer with 12 saves and zero losses - the second-most saves in the Mid-American Conference ... Also claimed a 1-0 record ... Held a team best ERA of 2.89 ERA in 28 full innings of work ... Recorded 23 strikeouts and only 13 walks ... Made four consecutive save attempts against Bradley (April 6), Miami (Ohio) (April 9), Illinois State (April 12), Chicago State (April 13) and Ohio (April 15) ... Recorded lone win against Ball State (May 14) ... Struckout three batters in 1.1 innings versus Bowling Green (March 27) ... Seven times recorded two-or-more strikeouts in a game ... Made six of his 12 saves in MAC play, tying for fourth-most in the conference.

2010: Threw a perfect frame in his first 2010 appearance at Austin Peay (2/26) ... Held the NIU lead for 1.1 scoreless innings at CSU Bakersfield (3/5) ... Did not give up a run in two innings at Cal Poly (3/10) ... Earned his first relief win, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless ball, vs. Milwaukee (3/24) ... Added a second win to his season total with a two inning scoreless appearance at Bowling Green (3/26) ... Allowed one run over three relief innings at Valparaiso (5/11) ... Registered his third win of the season, striking out six, vs. Milwaukee (5/18) ... Finished third on the team in wins (3) and third in appearances (20).

2009: Compiled a 10.27 ERA, 0-3 record with 28 strikeouts and 27 walks in 37.2 innings over 23 apperances, three starts ... Made his NIU debut with 0.2 innings of scoreless ball with a walk and a strikeout against North Florida (2/20) ... Threw two innings of shutout relief at Saint Louis (3/11) ... Contributed a scoreless inning in the Huskies' win vs. Buffalo (3/21) ... Struck out the side in an appearance vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee (4/1) ... Gave up one run in 2.2 innings at Kent State (4/5) ... Struck out a season-high seven batters in 3.1 innings vs. Ball State (5/9) ... Finished fourth on the team in strikeouts (28) and third in appearances (23).

High School: Rated among the top 40 pitchers in Illinois by the Chicago Sun-Times ... No. 64 ranked senior in the state by the Prep Baseball Report ... Threw a no-hitter during his junior season ... All-Academic selection in both baseball and basketball ... Ranked No. 27 nationally in Basketball Sparq Testing, a series of tests that includes agility, strength, speed and flexibility, with a score of 80.82 ...
