NIUHuskies.com presents the 2012 baseball season preview with Head Baseball Coach Ed Mathey, now in his 10th season at Northern Illinois. The Huskies return seven starters and two starting pitchers in 2012, along with four All-MAC picks, two all-region and a freshman All-American. To boast, NIU also has a pitcher on the preseason stopper of the year watchlist.
2011: Split time in the field and on the mound ... Made 17 appearances, starting 11 games in the outfield ... Started eight contest on the mound ... Made two relief pitching appearances ... Only committed one error in the outfield during the season ... Had a record of 2-2 on the mound ... Recorded six hits in 32 at-bats, one home run, four RBI and six runs ... Finished season with .188 batting average, .278 on-base percentage and .312 slugging percentage ... Hurled 38 strikeouts and 25 walks in 38 innings pitched ... Went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI against Chicago State (March 29) ... Recorded two hits, including a two-run homerun in an 18-8 win over Ball State (May 15) ... Earned first win of the season with a seven inning, nine strikeout performance at Bradley (April 26) ... Made three sacrifice hits, one each versus Bowling Green (March 25), Eastern Michigan (May 6) and Western Michigan (May 20).
2010: Tallied a pair of hits and stole a base at Austin Peay (2/28) ... Slugged his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, in a win at CSU Bakersfield (3/5) ... Slammed a solo homer and later recorded an RBI single at Southern Illinois (3/19) ... Recorded his third homer a day later with a solo shot at Southern Illinois (3/20) ... Scored the winning run in the eighth inning vs. Milwaukee (3/24) ... Drove in the Huskies' only run at Bowling Green (3/27)... Recorded a scoreless relief inning on the mound in a win at Bradley (3/31) ... Held the Wildcats scoreless in two innings of relief vs. Northwestern (4/14) ... Secured his first win during his best performance of the season, striking out ten Hawkeyes and tossing seven innings of one-run baseball, at Iowa (4/22) ... Enjoyed a 2-for-3 afternoon and contributed a pair of RBIs vs. Central Michigan (4/30) ... Earned his second win of the season, allowing two runs over six strong innings at Miller Park, at Milwaukee (5/12) ... Finished tied for third on the team in home runs (3), fourth in opposing batting average (.289), and fifth in batters struck out (30).
2009: Tallied a 1-1 record, 10.06 ERA with 15 strikeouts and 16 walks in 17.0 innings over six appearances, three starts on the mound ... Totaled a .083 average with one hit, two runs, two RBI and two walks in 17 games, five starts in the field ... Made his first mound appearance vs. Oregon State (2/26) ... Had his only hit of the season, a pinch-hit two-RBI single, in the home opener vs. Buffalo (3/20) ... Started in right field, walked, and scored a run vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee (4/1) ... Earned his first win vs. Illinois State in his first start, striking out five and allowing one earned run over five strong innings (4/14) ... Finished fifth on the team in sacrifice bunts (3).
High School: Ranked by Perfect Game Crosschecker as the No. 2 player in Wisconsin and No. 367 nationally ... Played for Team Wisconsin in 2007 All Star Game ... Named first team All-Bay Conference as outfielder and earned a second team nod as a pitcher during his junior season ... Named team MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and captain while helping his team to a conference title as a junior ... Hit .327 and slugged .596 while totaling 17 hits, 12 stolen bases, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored with four triples, three doubles and one home run in 17 games during his junior campaign ... Went 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA while striking out 70 in 41 innings as a pitcher during his junior year ...
