NIUHuskies.com presents the 2012 baseball season preview with Head Baseball Coach Ed Mathey, now in his 10th season at Northern Illinois. The Huskies return seven starters and two starting pitchers in 2012, along with four All-MAC picks, two all-region and a freshman All-American. To boast, NIU also has a pitcher on the preseason stopper of the year watchlist.
2011: Started 11 games and was a reliever in three other contests ... Held a 5-5 record while posting a 3.79 earned run average, along with 51 strikeouts and 39 walks in 73.2 innings pitched ... Recorded his first win of the season against Saint Louis in his first start of the season (March 16), striking out four batters, allowing two runs, off seven hits in 5.2 innings of work ... Threw 5.1 innings against Bowling Green, recording a season-high nine strikeouts and allowing two runs, six hits and four walks (March 26) ... Went a season-long 8.1 innings at Eastern Michigan, allowing only four hits and fanning four batters in the 1-0 loss (May 7) ... Earned the victory over Bowling Green in the Huskies first win in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, the Huskies first since win since 2008 (May 26); pitched 7.1 innings, three strikeouts, four hits, two runs and one walk against the Falcons ... Went seven-plus innings five times on the mound.
2010: Tossed a scoreless innings at Austin Peay and Arizona State to start his 2010 campaign (2/19, 2/26) ... Gave up one run over three innings of relief at Cal Poly (3/9) ... Struck out four over 6.2 innings in a quality start at UC Santa Barbara (3/13) ... Pitched five strong innings, allowing three runs, in his first win at Bradley (3/31) ... Limited the Redbirds to a single run over three frames to earn a win vs. Illinois State (4/6) ... Struck out a season-high five and allowed one run over five innings to win at Toledo (4/25) ... Scattered nine hits over seven innings of one-run ball to earn a victory vs. Central Michigan (5/2) ... Pitched 7.1 strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits, in a loss at Ball State (5/16) ... Posted his fifth win of the season in NIU's last game, allowing two earned runs over five innings, vs. Western Michigan (5/22) ... Finished tied for the team lead in wins (5), ranked third in strikeouts (39), third in innings pitched (71.2), and third in opposing batting average (.288).
2009: Made 12 appearances with three starts over 24.2 innings with 14 strikeouts, 12 walks, a 5.47 ERA and a 2-0 record ... Made his season debut on the mound at SaintLouis (3/10) ... Earned his first career win at Bradley, striking out three in 6.1 innings of one run baseball in his first start (3/25) ... Gave up one earned run and struck out three in his second win of the season vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee (4/1) ... Posted two innings of scoreless relief vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee (5/12) ... Finished third on the team in earned run average (5.47) and tied for second in wins (2).
High School: Threw a no-hitter for the Illinois Sparks during the 2008 summer season ... Recorded the highest fielding percentage (.977) in the Chicago Catholic League and went 1-1 with one save and a 4.44 ERA while spending time on the mound and at first base as a senior ... Went 1-0 on the mound and hit .304 with 11 RBI as a junior ... Posted a 5-2 record and 3.84 ERA as a sophomore before being moved up to the varsity team ... Finished 6-2 with a 4.24 ERA as a freshman ... Three-sport standout was starting quarterback for football team ... Completed a school-record 91-yard touchdown pass ... Threw for 1,800 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior ... Averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists per game in basketball to earn honorable mention all-area ...
