LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior Troy White (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) opened the first inning for Northern Illinois with bang, blasting a three-run homerun to give Northern Illinois a 3-0 lead over Texas Tech. But the Red Raiders matched the score in the bottom of the first and hit three homeruns in the game to defeat NIU, 10-4.
“We had great start to the game. (Alex) Jonesy walked, Jeff (Zimmerman) singled back up the middle and Troy hit a shot over the left field fence in his first game back,” said Head Coach Ed Mathey. “Unfortunately we were unable to get anything going later in the game against a good Texas Tech ball club.”
Mathey was quick to point out the positives from the game. “We’re seeing some good things from the guys. Jeff is starting to see the ball well and Eli Anderson (Glenview, Ill./New Trier) had four solid innings out of the bullpen and only surrendered one run and one walk.”
Northern Illinois jumped out to 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but TTU scored four to capture the lead in the bottom half of the inning, 4-3. The Red Raiders added two runs in the second and the fourth, and another in the third inning to increase the lead, 9-3.
Sophomore Jeff Zimmerman (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) drove in the Huskies fourth run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a single to left field, following an Alex Klonowski (Kearney, Mo.) single up the middle. Zimmerman finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. White’s lone hit of the day, a three-run homerun, was the fourth of his career and his first of the season.
NIU combined for eight hits in the game and junior Jamison Wells
(Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) 19-game hitting streak came to end as he went 0-for-3 at the plate. Defensively, senior Brett Frantini
(Minooka, Ill.) threw out two runners behind the plate attempting to steal, bringing his season total to four runners caught stealing.
The Huskies (0-5) will close the series with Texas Tech (7-1) tomorrow evening at 5 p.m.
