CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Junior Jordan Rishavy (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall) drove in the winning run in the top of the 10th inning and senior Kyle Glancy (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) closed the game with a two-out bases load strikeout to give Northern Illinois its first win of the season over Austin Peay, 5-1.
“Our guys and Jordan came through when we needed them to tonight,” said an ecstatic Ed Mathey after the game, “We left a lot of guys on base in the game but when we needed it, we did it. Alex (Klonowski) made it a little interesting the bottom of the 10th but Kyle came in sealed it for us.”
Chuckling, Mathey said “it would have been my personal preference to do this a little earlier in the ball game, but we’ll take it.”
NIU got on the board first in the top of the third inning when Troy White (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) grounded out to second base and drove home Jamison Wells (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) who reached base on balls.
The Governors struck back in the bottom of the seventh after a single by Matt Wollenzin scored Reed Harper to tie the game, 1-1. Following the run, junior Ben Etcheverry (Winter Haven Fla./Lake Region) entered the game for senior Tom Barry (Orland Park/Providence Catholic) on the mound, hurling two innings, surrendering four hits and one walk. Barry went 6.1 innings, giving up the lone APSU run, three hits and four walks.
In the top of the ninth, Wells singled and Alex Jones (Kansas City, Kan./Piper), who entered the at-bat 3-for-4, was intentionally walked to give the Huskies two runners on-base with two outs. White stepped up to the plate and grounded out to give APSU the walk-off opportunity.
Sophomore Alex Klonowski (Kearney, Mo.) stepped onto the mound with one out and one on in the ninth and retired the next two batters to send the game to extra innings.
Sophomore Jeff Zimmerman (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J Andrew) started the tenth with a strikeout but reached base on a wild pitch to erase the out. Seniors Alex Beckmann (Batavia, Ill.) and Brett Frantini (Minooka, Ill.) then followed and walked to load the bases for Rishavy, who then doubled and advanced to third on an error to score Zimmerman, Beckmann and Frantini. Rishavy crossed the plate on a single by Wells through the left side to lift the Huskies 5-1 heading into the bottom of the 10th inning.
On the mound Klonowski struck out the first two Governor batters, but loaded the bases with two walks and by beaning batter Dylan Riner. Glancy then entered for his first save attempt of the season and struck gold when he fanned the final batter, securing the Huskies first win of the season.
Northern Illinois left 12 runners on base on the contest and combined for nine hits, five stolen bases and only one error in the 3 hour, 58 minute epic.
NIU (1-11) won its first game of the season and gave Austin Peay (8-4) its fourth loss of the season. The Huskies will return to action tomorrow morning in the Riverview Inn Challenge to take on Arkansas State (8-6). First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. Central time.
