CHICAGO, Ill. - Northern Illinois scored twice in the second inning and never trailed in an 11-1 victory at Chicago State Tuesday. The win improves the Huskies to 8-7 ahead of their MAC and home opener Friday against Ohio.
Mark Badgley (1-2) notched his first victory of the season by going five innings and striking out three while one unearned run was scored against him. The quartet of Cody Beck, Andy Deain, Dave Nykiel and Matt German each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
NIU got on the board with a pair of runs in the second inning off the bat of Matt Behren, whose two-run double plated Seykora and Danny Reed.
The Cougars closed the gap to 2-1 with a run in the fourth before the Huskies answered with a tally of their own in the sixth on a Pat Minogue RBI groundout.
Daniel Jewett added to the NIU advantage with a two RBI single in a three-run Huskie eighth. In the ninth inning, freshman Jordin Hood belted a pinch-hit three-run home run, his second round-tripper of the year, to cap the scoring.
Jewett and Reed led the Huskie offense with two hits each.
