KLONO GOES THE DISTANCE... AGAIN
Northern Illinois pitcher/second baseman Alex Klonowski (Kearney, Mo.) pitched a complete game Saturday at Southern Illinois, his second-straight, in the Huskies 3-2 loss to the Salukis. Klonowski scattered 10 hits and struck out three batters, allowing two walks and three runs to become the first NIU pitcher since Trevor Feeney in 2007, a Detroit Tigers draftee, to complete two-consecutive starts.
HOOK, LINE AND SINKER
Freshman Tommy Hook (Lockport/Lockport Township) was Northern Illinois' model of consistency at Southern Illinois as he batted 3-for-8 in his three starts with two sacrifice hits and two runs. He finished with an on-base percentage of .444 and recorded a hit in each game. Hook made two starts in left field and another at second base. He leads NIU in batting average at .350.
WELLS INCHING CLOSER
Senior Jamison Wells (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) is inching closer to breaking the all-time stolen bases record at Northern Illinois with 68 in his career. So far this season, the NIU center fielder has four stolen bases and has averaged 26 the last two seasons. Alvin Maynard (1979-80) set the record in his two seasons with the Huskies 71.
JOHN OLERUD AWARD WATCH LIST WORTHY?
Junior Alex Klonowski has been a solid two-way player for the Huskies since his arrival in 2011, appearing in 85 games on the diamond with 43 appearances on the mound. "Klono" sports a .286 batting average, has 14 hits and leads NIU in RBI (8). On the mound he sports a 1-3 record, a 3.86 ERA in 28 innings with a team-high 19 strikeouts. The John Olerud Award is given to the top Division I player who excels on the mound and in the field.
Northern Illinois is currently on its spring break trip/barnstorming tour. While on their 10-day quest, the Huskies will travel from DeKalb, to Carbondale, to Murray, Ky., to Nashville, Tenn., and back - a total of 1,144 miles on the road - to play Southern Illinois, Murray State, Belmont and Lipscomb.
40 YEARS LATER
In March 1973, the Huskies went on a spring break trip Tennessee to take on Belmont, Lipscomb, Middle Tennesse and Vanderbilt. This year, NIU will again head to Nashville to take on Belmont and Lipscomb. The Huskies went 1-1 with Lipscomb and defeated Belmont on the trip that year.
A SOLID WEEKEND ROTATION
The weekend pitching rotation for Northern Illinois arguably had its first complete series as all three starters pitched well enough to win. Starters Eli Anderson (Glenview/New Trier), Alex Klonowski and Jordan Ruckman (Kankakee/Herscher) combined for 21 innings pitched, seven strikeouts, a 1.38 WHIP and an ERA of 3.00 against Southern Illinois Friday and Saturday.
Senior Zach Badgley (McHenry, Ill.) is the fourth and final Badgley brother to play for Northern Illinois in 2013. All pitchers, the Badgley era began in 1997 with Dan playing through 2001, followed by Mark (2003-07) and Nick (2008-09). Mark was named to Collegiate Baseball's Freshman All-America team in 2003 when he set the program record for saves with 14. Nick also appeared as an outfielder. All told on the mound, the Badgley's have accounted for 212 appearances (the equivalant of every game over 3.8 years), 31 starts, 496.0 innings pitched (an entire season), 19 saves and six complete games.
SCOUTING THE BREDS
Murray State owns a 6-9 record entering the series with NIU following a 2-1 series defeat to Morehead State in the Breds’ Ohio Valley opening series. MSU is 3-0 versus MAC opponents this season after sweeping Bowling Green at home Feb. 22-24, 3-0. A territorial group, Murray State is 5-3 at home. Brandon Eggenschwiler and Ty Stetson lead the Huskies at the plate with a .362 and .333 batting average, respectively, and combine for a .407 on-base percentage. Seven different pitchers have started games on the mound this season. Freshman Andrew Bramley sports a 0.53 ERA in 17.0 innings.
The Huskies will close their spring break trip this weekend at the Music City Tournament where they'll face Belmont and Lipscomb.
