Northern Illinois vs. Toledo

January 13, 2008 - DeKalb, Ill.

Toledo Head Coach Stan Joplin

"You are not going to win very many games if you play like we did today.  I thought our effort was bad, we were out-hustled, we missed 15 free throws.  It was tough.  We had open shots, I thought sometimes we shot too quickly.  We were never in sync.  There is not much we could do.  We have to play better.  We had shots.  I thought our defense was the worst it has been this year.  We didn't play any defense or even attempt to play defense.  In the first half, they shot the ball well.  We played like we were at the Rec Center.  We weren't aggressive against their press.  We had 13 turnovers.  We average a lot more than that.  The press got us out of sync, we were hesitant.  We didn't adjust like we should have.  At least we weren't out there turning the ball over.  Defensively, that's where I'm really disappointed.  We were making strides and I feel like we took a couple steps backward today.

"We kept creeping back in [at different times during the game], but we needed a stop.  It was a mindset we didn't bring defensively.  Our offense has been worse and we won.  We didn't play, we didn't do anything defensively.  They got the loose balls, the deflections, they wanted it more."

Northern Illinois Head Coach Ricardo Patton

"It was a great first MAC win for our team.  We had a great level of energy on defense that really helped us win this ball game.

"I don't think we are good enough to give a team a steady diet of one defense. Defensively, I like to be aggressive and mix it up.

"Our post players - Egan Grafel and Shaun Logan - led us in assists.  We shared the basketball today.  Our assist to turnover ratio was solid and that's what we want to do.

"A number of the guys coming off the bench could be starters so [our bench scoring] is a little misleading.  Jarvis Nichols could be a starter but he tends to become too satisfied with himself.

"It is difficult to go on the road and win in any league.  You have to take care of your home court.  There should be a sense of pride.  Our team is starting to develop that.  This needs to be a very difficult place for visiting teams to play.

"We talked at halftime that [Toledo] had only lost both halves in one game.  We prepared for them to come out strong in the second half.  Bristan Kelly did a nice job of scoring points.  We need for him to rebound too.

NIU Guard Jarvis Nichols

"My teammates were looking for me.  When I hit the first one I started getting in rhythm.  I got in a good rhythm (from three-point range) and that made it a lot easier."

NIU Forward Bristan Kelley

"Coach always talks about playing inside out and getting it down low, then taking it to the basket or passing it out.  My teammates put me in good position."
