Northern Illinois will open 2012 by hosting Roosevelt University in the fourth game of its current five-game home stand. Monday’s contest is the first meeting all-time between the Huskies and Lakers; it is also the final non-conference game for NIU before the Huskies open Mid-American Conference play. NIU was last on the court on Dec. 20, 2010, against Valparaiso. Zach Miller posted a career-high six assists and Keith Gray grabbed a career-best seven rebounds against the Crusaders.
The Roosevelt Lakers, members of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference of the NAIA, will be playing their third Division I opponent when they travel to DeKalb, having already met Chicago State and UIC. Paul Tometich leads the Lakers in scoring averaging 11.4 points per contest. Brandyn Denson averages 9.7 points and a team-high 9.6 rebounds per game.
Against the Lakers
Monday’s contest will be the first all-time meeting between Northern Illinois and Roosevelt.
NIU head coach Mark Montgomery and Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin have ties going back to their shared alma mater, Michigan State University. Griffin, who is in his third season as the head coach at Roosevelt, served as a graduate assistant with the Spartans from 2006-08, while Montgomery was the lead assistant with the Spartans.
Going to the Glass
Keith Gray pulled down a career-high seven rebounds as NIU outrebounded Valparaiso, 32-25, in its last game. The Huskies have bettered their opponents on the glass in three-straight games and in four of the last five. Over that five game stretch, Aksel Bolin is leading the Huskies in rebounding, pulling down 7.4 boards per game.
Zach Miller posted a career-best six assists and a career-high three steals last time out against Valparaiso (Dec. 20). Miller, who has started the last three games for NIU, ranks third in the MAC in assists among freshmen and fourth in assist-turnover ratio (1.3).
Bolin Goes to the Boards
Aksel Bolin grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds against Southern Illinois (Dec. 17), including a career-best eight on the offensive end. Bolin nearly registered a double-double, scoring nine points against the Salukis. The Asker, Norway native currently ranks 15th in the MAC in rebounding, pulling down 5.6 boards per game, and third in offensive rebounding at 2.5 per contest.
NIU will begin Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 7, when the Huskies host Eastern Michigan at 3 p.m., at the NIU Convocation Center.
