Just four days after being tabbed the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, junior guard Xavier Silas collected another honor from the league office, as he was recognized as the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Dec. 27, 2009.
Playing his first home game of the season against Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 22, Silas scored a game-high 19 points, going 7-for-7 from the free throw line, and pulled down seven rebounds, in Northern Illinois' 18-point (87-69) win.
The Huskies have played three games since then, including wins over North Dakota (1/2/2010) and Chicago State Wednesday night on the road. In NIU's current four-game stretch, Silas is averaging 23.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting nearly 46 percent (.459) from the field, and 84 percent (.839) from the free throw line.
Silas, a Colorado transfer, currently leads the Huskies 18.3 points per game, and has led NIU in scoring in six-of the seven games he has played in. He carries a 3.353 grade-point-average in Northern Illinois' media communications curriculum.
The Huskies (4-8) will travel to Muncie, Ind., and Worthen Arena, to open MAC play at Ball State (6-6) Saturday (Jan. 9) afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on mynetworkTV in Rockford (channel 16 on Comcast cable) through the Ball State Sports Network.
