NIU Men's Hoops To Present Lt. Gov. Quinn, Illinois Military Family Relief Fund With $3,000 On Jan. 22

DeKalb, IL - Northern Illinois University men's basketball will present Illinois Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn with a check for $3,000 for the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund at halftime of its Jan. 22 basketball game vs. Eastern Michigan (7:05 p.m.).

Part of the team's Hoops 4 Troops campaign, NIU men's basketball, along with the Northern Illinois University College of Business, have been selling red silicone bracelets with the inscription "Huskie Hoop Time" to raise funds for the relief fund, which provides financial assistance to national guardsmen and reservists called up to federal active duty. So far, the relief fund has provided over $2.4 million in financial assistance to more than 4,300 families in the state of Illinois.

"I would like to salute the NIU Men's Basketball team for this generous fundraiser called "Hoops 4 Troops", Quinn said. "Abraham Lincoln said 'It is up to us on the home front to care for those who are bearing the battle'. This is an excellent example of how everyday individuals can be Homefront Heroes."

Sold for $1 apiece, the Huskies have already sold 3,000 silicone bracelets and will continue to sell the bracelets at home basketball games for the rest of the season.

"We are excited to have Pat (Quinn) on hand to represent the great state of Illinois," Northern Illinois head coach Rob Judson said. "This is truly a noble cause. All Americans are extremely grateful for the selfless efforts and sacrifices made by our military every moment of every day."
