Huskie Pride Strikes Again: NIU To Now Donate $13,000 To Illinois
Military Relief Fund On Jan. 22
Never underestimate the power of the American, Northern Illinois
University spirit. Following a Jan. 11 announcement that NIU mens
basketball and the Northern Illinois University College of Business
were going to donate $3,000 to Illinois Lieutenant Governor Pat
Quinn for the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund at halftime of
the Jan. 22 mens basketball game vs. Eastern Michigan (7:05
p.m.), an anonymous donor has pledged $10,000 to push Wednesdays
donation to $13,000.
tremendous gesture for the most noble of causes, head coach
Rob Judson said. To have one of our own present this gift
for these families is truly inspiring.
Prior to the
$10,000 donation, NIU mens basketball, along with the College
of Business, sold red silicone bracelets with the inscription Huskie
Hoop Time to raise funds for the relief fund, which provides
financial assistance to national guardsmen and reservists called
up to federal active duty. So far, the relief fund has provided
over $2.4 million in financial assistance to more than 4,300 families
in the state of Illinois.
Sold for $1 apiece, the Huskies have already sold 3,000 silicone
bracelets and will continue to sell the bracelets at home basketball
games for the rest of the season.
