CLEVELAND - The Northern Illinois men's basketball team is taking quick ownership of the weekly awards in the Mid-American Conference West Division. Junior guard Darion "Jake" Anderson, after joining the Huskies' 1,000-point club and leading NIU to consecutive home wins over league foes Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan, was tabbed the MAC-West Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Junior guard Xavier Silas' first two career weekly honors (1/4/2010 and 1/11/2010) coupled with Anderson's plaudit gives NIU three-straight MAC-West Player of the Week awards for the first time in school history. Anderson has now claimed six West Division Player of the Week tallies in his two-plus year career.

Anderson became just the 15th player to score 1,000 points in his Northern Illinois career before the end of his third season, and averaged 17.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game on a 52.2 field goal percentage, in the Huskies' two victories over WMU (1/13/2010) and EMU (1/16/2010). NIU is off to a 3-0 start in MAC play, matching its best start in school history, and is alone atop the MAC-West standings.

Anderson scored 12 points, pulled down six rebounds and dished out four assists in the Huskies' 87-77 win over the Broncos. He was 4-of-9 from the field, and also added one steal in 37 minutes of action.

Against Eastern Michigan, Anderson poured in 22 points, 18 in the second half, and pulled down seven rebounds with two assists, one block and one steal in 24 minutes. Anderson was 8-of-11 from the field, and drilled two free throws with 59 seconds remaining to push his career scoring total to 1,000 points. He also went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, helping the Huskies record a season-best 82.8 percent (24-29) effort from the free throw line, including an 18-for-18 mark in the second half.

For the week, Anderson was 12-of-23 (.522) from the field, 8-for-10 (.800) from the free throw line, scored 34 points, corralled 13 rebounds and had six assists with two steals and one block in an average of 30.5 minutes per contest.

The Huskies will wrap up their first round of MAC-West play with two road games this week. NIU will take on host Toledo Wednesday (1/20/2010) at 6 p.m., and travel to Mt. Pleasant, Mich., to face preseason West Division favorite Central Michigan Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m. CST.
