Northern Illinois Cage Names Nominated On IHSA List of '100 Legends' For 2007 Boys State Meet

DeKalb, IL - Several familiar Northern Illinois University cage names appear on the list of 281 individuals nominated for the Illinois High School Association’s “100 Legends” who will be feted at the state boys basketball tournament in 2007 for the centennial observance of the IHSA’s nationally known hardwood centerpiece.

According to the IHSA website, all “Legends” nominees “...must have participated as a player or as a coach in at least one game of the final IHSA tournament from 1908 to 2005.”

The complete “100 Legends” ballot by era currently appears on the IHSA website and all prep basketball fans can vote online for their favorites (and hopefully, some Huskies) at <> until March 19, 2006.

Leading the Huskie “100 Legends” nomination contingent would be former Northern Illinois head men’s basketball coach and Athletics Hall of Famer John McDougal (1976-86). “Johnny Mac” qualified three times for the IHSA “100 Legends” listing---as a player at Salem High School and boys’ basketball boss at Aurora West High School and Rockford Lutheran High School. McDougal coached the Huskies’ first Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association tourney team in 1981-82.

The late Alex Saudargas (1934-38)---another NIU Athletics Hall of Famer who lettered in both football and wrestling---made the list for his head coaching exploits at Rockford West High School. A charter member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Saudargas led his Warrior quintets to IHSA boys state titles in 1955 and 1956.

Former Northern Illinois administrator, the late McKinley “Deacon” Davis, was also nominated by the IHSA. An All-Stater on Freeport High School’s 1951 state title quintet, Davis also starred on a NCAA Final Four tournament entry at the University of Iowa and toured with the famous Harlem Globetrotters.

Current Huskie cage bossman Rob Judson would recognize two names on the IHSA “Legends” list---his father Phil and his uncle Paul who both started on the storied 1952 state championshipi quintet at Hebron High School.

Former Northern Illinois hardwood standouts on the IHSA “Legends” list include Hall of Fame forward Kenny Battle (1984-86) from Aurora West, forward Dennis Douglas (1983-85) from Quincy HIgh School, forward Jim Edmondson (1984-86) from Hinckley-Big Rock High School, Hall of Fame forward Matt Hicks (1974-77) from Aurora West, guard Mike “The Lip” Lipnisky (1990-95) from Rolling Meadows High School, and center Mark Voreis (1970-71) from DeKalb High School.
