Northern Illinois will conclude its first round of games against MAC West foes on Saturday night when the Huskies host Ball State at the NIU Convocation Center. Saturday is also NIU’s annual Alumni Day as it welcomes back members of the Huskie basketball family.
About Ball State
The Cardinals come to DeKalb with an 11-5 overall record, 3-1 in conference play. Jarrod Jones leads the Cardinals in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Jesse Berry and Tyrae Robinson also scored in double figures for Ball State at 10.1 and 10.0 points per game, respectively. The Cardinals are the top defensive team in the MAC, allowing just 57.7 points per game while holding opponents to just 37.4 percent shooting.
Against the Cardinals
Northern Illinois trails Ball State in the all-time series, 44-32. Ball State has won the last three contests between the two schools, including a season sweep a year ago. The last Huskie victory against the Cardinals was a 62-48 victory in Muncie on Jan. 9, 2010. All-time in DeKalb, the Huskies have a 22-15 edge in the series. Ball State has won the last two at the NIU Convocation Center with the most recent home win for the Huskies coming on Feb. 28, 2009, a 56-55 victory.
NIU Celebrates Alumni Day
The past and present of Huskies basketball will be on hand this weekend as NIU celebrates its basketball alumni day. The annual alumni game will take place at 4:30 p.m., prior to the tilt between the Huskies and Cardinals. The alumni will also be recognized at halftime of the nightcap.
Finding His Groove
Stian Berg has grown into a larger role in the Huskie backcourt over the last three games. After averaging 1.3 points and 7.6 minutes per game during the first 13 games of the season, Berg has scored 8.7 points per contest while playing 23 minutes per game over the last three games. Berg is shooting 66.7 percent from the field in the last three, including 54.5 percent from behind the three-point arc. In his first career start against Central Michigan (Jan. 14), Berg scored a career-best 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from three-point range.
Last time out against Toledo (Jan. 18), the Huskies recorded a season-high 12 steals, led by three each from Abdel Nader and Stian Berg. The dozen swipes were the most for the Huskies since Nov. 21, 2010 when they recorded 13 against Cardinal Stritch.
Northern Illinois will begin its swing through the MAC East Division on Wednesday, Jan. 25, when the Huskies visit Kent State. Game time between the Huskies and Golden Flashes is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
