Northern Illinois Adjusts Game Times for January 30 Basketball Doubleheader

Jan. 21, 2010

DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois has moved the game times for its basketball doubleheader on Saturday, January 30, up one hour. The NIU-Buffalo men's basketball game will now tip off at Noon (Central), followed by the women's basketball game versus Kent State at approximately 2:30 p.m., or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men's contest.

The change is being made to accommodate a request from the University at Buffalo, which informed NIU that its flight Saturday night from Chicago to Buffalo had been cancelled, requiring the Bulls to book an earlier flight home.

Northern Illinois Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher said it is important for league teams to assist each other when unique situations arise.

"I believe strongly that we should do all we can to help a fellow conference school with a problem such as this," Compher said. "Being part of a conference means working together whenever possible. I feel certain that our Huskie teams would receive the same consideration from our MAC brethren if we were to encounter a similar issue."

Compher also said the nine days' advance notice will enable the athletic department to reach out to fans through every medium available and inform them of the time change and that those efforts are already underway. This includes e-mail, mail, flyers, telephone calls, Facebook, Twitter and personal contacts, among others. Radio and newspaper ads, public address announcements and game broadcasts will be used to inform the public of the earlier game time, as well as the "Cram the Convo" promotion on January 30.

As part of the "Cram the Convo" effort, tickets for both games of the doubleheader are on sale for just $2 for an upper bowl seat with groups of 25 or more eligible to purchase those tickets for just $1. The men's game versus Buffalo is the "Coaches versus Cancer" game for cancer awareness, and the group Colleges Against Cancer will be set up in the Convocation Center lobby to distribute information on cancer prevention. In addition, a 50/50 raffle at the game will benefit the American Cancer Society. The women's game is part of the NCAA "Pack the House Challenge" weekend. As part of Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day, every faculty and staff member can pick up four complimentary tickets good for both games.

Reserved tickets in the lower bowl are $9 for the men's game and those tickets are also good for general admission (upper bowl) seating for the ensuing women's contest on that day. In addition, any individual who purchases the $2 Cram the Convo ticket for the men's game can use that ticket for the NIU-Kent State women's game.
