Northern Illinois Men’s Basketball Travels To Wright State For ESPN Bracket Buster Contest

DeKalb, IL –Northern Illinois University’s men’s basketball team will travel to Wright State University, located in Dayton, OH, for the Feb. 19 ESPN Bracket Buster match-up announced Monday (Jan. 31) by the Mid-American Conference office.

The Feb. 19 contest, which will be played at 6 p.m. (CST), will mark the second time the Huskies have participated in the ESPN Bracket Buster event. Last year Northern Illinois traveled to Peoria, IL, to face the Bradley Braves.

The contest also means that Northern Illinois will host the Raiders in a regular-season contest during the 2005-06 season at the Convocation Center.

“This is a great opportunity for our team to face another quality opponent,” head coach Rob Judson said. “As with the Bradley game last year, a big perk to this game is that we get to host Wright State in the Convocation Center next season.”

Former rivals as members of the Mid-Continent (1991-94) and Midwestern Collegiate (1994-97) Conferences, Northern Illinois and Wright State have met 17 times on the hardwood with the Huskies holding a 10-7 all-time series lead. The last meeting between the two clubs actually came in a non-conference affair, with Wright State earning a 73-66 road win in Chick Evans Field House on Nov. 21, 2000. Northern Illinois’ last visit to the Ervin J. Nutter Center (11,019 capacity) came on Dec. 21, 1999, with the Huskies claiming a 70-58 win. Overall, NIU is 5-4 when playing on the road in the series, including four consecutive wins in Dayton.

So far this season Wright State is 10-10 overall and 5-4 in Horizon League play. The Huskies and Raiders have shared four common opponents thus far, with WSU losing at Loyola (65-51) on Jan. 15, vs. Miami (59-54) on Dec. 8, at Ball State (61-54) on Dec. 1 and vs. Akron (81-70) on Dec. 11. Wright State does have one win over a Mid-American Conference opponent this season, a 74-64 home win over Toledo on Nov. 27. Northern Illinois and Toledo have yet to meet this season and are scheduled to meet on Feb. 12 in Toledo and on March 2 in DeKalb.

With Wright State added to the 2005-06 non-conference home schedule, NIU has already secured home games vs. DePaul, Kansas State and the Raiders.

Northern Illinois (7-11, 3-7 MAC) returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 3) when it hosts the Marshall Thundering Herd at the NIU Convocation Center. The game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Chicago at 7:07 p.m. (CST).
