DEKALB - The Cardinal squad received 20-point efforts from Game-MVP Phiffney Dukes (1997-99) and Mike McKinney (2003-07) and led comfortably throughout in a 97-83 victory over the Black squad in the annual Alumni Game Saturday morning at the Convocation Center.
Walter Thompson (2000-04) contributed 19 points and NIU all-time leading scorer T.J. Lux (1995-2000) added 17 for the Cardinal, who was coached by John Butler and Bill Finucane.
Dukes immediately set the tone for the Cardinal squad, scoring 12 points early in the first half. Lux led all scorers with 13 at the end of the first stanza and the Cardinal took a 48-36 led into the break.
McKinney threw down a handful of fast-break, highlight-reel dunks in the second half and scored 12 points after the break. Thompson secured the Cardinal victory by knocking down six consecutive free throws late in the game.
The Black squad was led by Jay Bates (2001-03), who pored in 15 of his game-high 25 points in the second half. Donald Whiteside (1987-91) added 22 points for the Black squad, who was coached by Mike Coomes and Mike Korcek.
