Cleveland, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced on Wednesday [March 7] that Northern Illinois senior guard Mike McKinney (Evanston, Ill.) has been named to the Honorable Mention All-MAC squad.
McKinney leads the Huskies in scoring, averaging 12.5 points-per-game, while shooting 51.2% (144-for-281) from the field. Earlier this season, McKinney became the first player in NIU history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists for his career.
Joining McKinney on the Honorable Mention All-MAC squad is Ball State's Skip Mills; Bowling Green's Nate Miller and Martin Samarco; Buffalo's Yassin Idbihi; Kent State's Mike Scott; Miami's Nathan Peavy; Ohio's Sonny Troutman; Toledo's Florentino Valencia and Western Michigan's Shawntes Gary.
Akron forward Romeo Travis was named the MAC Player of the Year, while his teammate Cedrick Middleton earned Sixth Man of the Year honors. Toledo head coach Stan Joplin was selected as the Coach of the Year, while his point guard Kashif Payne picked up the Defensive Player of the Year award. Western Michigan guard David Kool earned Freshman of the Year honors.
Earlier this week, NIU freshman Cody Yelder (Calumet Park, Ill.) earned some post-season honors, as he was named to MidAmPub's All-Freshman Second Team. As a freshman, Yelder is averaging 9.2 points-per-game and is shooting 51.2% (65-for-127) from the field.
NIU opens MAC Tournament action tonight, as the #11 Huskies battle #6 Western Michigan with a scheduled starting time of 6 p.m. (CST).
