Northern Illinois' Mike McKinney Earns All-Mid-American Conference Honors

Cleveland, OH - For just the fifth time in school history, a Northern Illinois University men's basketball underclassman was named to an All-Conference squad. Sophomore guard Mike McKinney (Evanston, IL / Evanston Township) joined the likes of T.J. Lux (1995-96, 1996-97), Kenny Battle (1984-85, 1985-86), Allen Rayhorn (1979-80) and Jim Bradley (1971-72) on Wednesday, when he was named an Honorable Mention All Mid-American Conference selection by the Conference coaches.

Just the third underclassman in NIU annuals to earn All-MAC recognition (joining Rayhorn and Battle), McKinney enjoyed a terrific sophomore campaign in which he led the team in both scoring (12.6) and rebounding (6.1). While his scoring average ranked 17th in the league, his 6.1 rebounds ranked ninth conference-wide and second overall among guards to Miami's Chet Mason (7.7). The team-leader on the offensive glass as well (64), McKinney finished the year eighth in the MAC at 2.26 offensive boards a night.

One of the League's most versatile players, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound guard finished the regular season second among MAC perimeter players with four double-doubles, three of which occurred in conference play. The dynamic, high-flyer also led the team with 26 dunks, while ranking third in assists (64), third in steals (25) and fourth in blocked shots (7).

The first Huskie sophomore to lead the team in scoring since Stacy Arrington (1988-89), McKinney reached that career-high scoring average (12.6) by ending the year with 10 consecutive double-figure scoring performances, including 15 in the MAC Tournament opener at Buffalo (3-7-05) on Monday. The team's leading scorer 10 times this season, McKinney reached double figures in 22-of-28 games and tied a career high with 22 points vs. Marshall (2-3-05) and at Eastern Michigan (2-16-05). McKinney also recorded double-doubles in both meetings with EMU, adding 10 rebounds in both contests. In addition to a 19-point, 10-board effort in a near upset of Western Michigan (1-2-05), he notched a team-best 11 rebounds at Wright State (2-19-05) in the ESPN Bracket Buster event to go with 11 points.

"We are pleased with the development of Mike's (McKinney) consistency throughout the season," head coach Rob Judson said. "He made some great strides during his sophomore year and we are looking forward to his continued development throughout this off-season and into his junior season."

A much-improved shooter from his freshman to sophomore seasons, McKinney finished the year hitting 51.4 percent of his shots from the floor, including a career best 45.0 percent shooting rate (18-of-40) from three-point range. His shooting efficiency actually improved during league play, with McKinney shooting 53.4 percent from the floor and a career-best 78.5 (62-of-79) from the foul line. In fact, McKinney's numbers rose markedly across the board in MAC play, with the second-year performer averaging 13.7 points to go with 6.2 rebounds. McKinney also averaged 2.4 assists.

Although Northern Illinois' 2004-05 men's basketball season has come to a close, the team will recognize the many achievements of this young club at the team banquet held Monday March 21 in the NIU Convocation Center. The banquet social begins at 5:30 with the dinner starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children. Fans can also sponsor a player meal at the banquet for just $12.
