The Spartans advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the 10 seasons, including three appearances in the Final Four (2005, 2009, 2010). • Michigan State won 235 games during Montgomery's coaching tenure, including 18 NCAA Tournament games, and made five trips to the Sweet 16. • Helped coach 26 All-Big Ten players at Michigan State and six players that went on to be selected in the NBA Draft. • Has helped Michigan State rank in the top 25 nationally in defensive points allowed, defensive field goal percentage and rebounding margin in three of the last four seasons. • Michigan State led the nation in rebounding margin in 2008-09 and 2009-10. • In 2010, Montgomery was named by FoxSports.com as one of the top five high-major assistant coaches in the country. • Named the top assistant coach in the Big Ten by national college basketball writer Jeff Goodman, based on a poll of league coaches. • Began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Central Michigan, for four seasons where he helped CMU win the Mid-American Conference championship in 2000-01. • The conference championship was the first for Central Michigan since 1987 and the school recorded only its second 20-win season since 1976. • Named to the All-Big Ten Third Team as a senior in 1992 and also served as a team captain that season. • Played on the 1990 Big Ten championship team at Michigan State. Appeared in three NCAA Tournaments and an NIT Final Four as a player with the Spartans. • Four-year starting guard still ranks third all-time in Michigan State history in steals (168) and fourth in assists (561). • Twice earned Academic All-Big Ten honors during his playing career.
