Milford, Conn. -- The Gary Steelheads announced on Tuesday [April 10] that they have selected former Northern Illinois center James Hughes (Silvis, Ill.) with the first pick of the second round [11th overall] in the United States Basketball League draft.

Hughes, the 2006 Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year, averaged 12.1 points and a team-best 6.1 rebounds-per-game as a senior in 2006-07. He became the 27th player in school-history to notch 1,000 career-points and broke the school-record for blocks in a career, as the Silvis, Ill., native finished with 208 career swats.

Hughes is the first Huskie player to be drafted since 2000, as NIU's all-time scorer and rebounder T.J. Lux (1996-2000) was selected by Gary in the sixth round of the Continental Basketball Association draft in September of 2000. Lux was also a third-round draft pick of the USBL's Florida Sea Dragons in 2000.
