DEKALB, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois men's and women's basketball teams took part in the Tyler Elementary School's Back to School Bash, helping to welcome back the students for the new school year.
The Huskie men and women spent time interacting with the kids, playing games, reading and talking about the importance of staying in school.
"It was really fun for me because I was one of those kids once, said NIU junior and DeKalb native Jordan Threloff. "I remember NIU players coming to my school and interacting with us. It was a lot of fun, we played tag, we were on the swing set, it was a good time and hopefully they will be encouraged to come support us this year."
With practice still a few weeks away, the event was a chance for the Huskies to meet some of their younger fans in the community.
"It is great having the opportunity to give back," said junior Pete Rakocevic. "It's big to know that we have the support of community and it is important to us to reach out and be a part of the lives of young kids. Just having the opportunity to give back a little is what it is all about."
The NIU men's and women's basketball teams will both open the 2013-14 season with exhibition games on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Huskie men will take on Rockford University while the NIU women will face Lewis University. Season tickets for the 2013-14 basketball season will go on sale on Monday, Sept. 23.
