HUSKIE BASKETBALL TEAMS TAKE TO CONVOCATION CENTER FLOOR IN SATURDAY SCRIMMAGES
DeKALB, IL - Even though the first official Northern Illinois University basketball game in the new Convocation Center is still 38 days away, Huskie fans can get a sneak preview of the $35.8 million building and its new tenants on Saturday (October 19). Prior to Saturday's Homecoming football game versus Central Michigan University, both the men's and women's team will hold intrasquad scrimmages on the Convocation Center floor.

Fresh off his first year with the Huskies in which they improved by seven games, Rob Judson's men's team starts the day with a 10 a.m. exhibition game. One hour later it's the women's team-looking to improve on last year's semifinal appearance in the Mid-American Conference Tournament-under the direction of Carol Hammerle.

"This is a great opportunity for our fans to see our team in action in the new arena," Judson said. "We hope this adds to Huskie fans' Homecoming experience. Our guys have been working hard and it's going to be fun to see them play in the arena."

The first full contest for the men takes place Tuesday, November 5, when they play Marathon AAU in a 7:05 p.m. exhibition game. Northern Illinois hits the court for the first time officially on Saturday, November 23, during "The Big Weekend." The Huskies start the 2002-03 home season against DePaul University-in the first game for Blue Demons' head coach Dave Leitao-at 5:35 p.m. in a Fox Sports Net Chicago telecast.

Before the men get on the floor during "The Big Weekend" the women's team will christen the new building against a familiar face. Former Huskie head coach Jane Albright returns to DeKalb for a 7:05 p.m. contest on Friday, November 22. Prior to the season opener against the Badgers, the women take the Convocation Center floor against the Chicago Challengers in a 7:05 p.m. exhibition game Friday, November 8.

"It's going to be fun to have women's basketball be a part of Homecoming," Hammerle added. "This is a great opportunity for the fans to see our team after one week of practice and at the same time visit our awesome facility. The players are excited to be on the arena floor, it's a true Division I experience."

Besides getting a chance to see the Huskies in action, fans will have the opportunity to purchase season and single-game tickets. The Northern Illinois athletics ticket off will be staffing the event from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with representative available in the main arena and the ticket office.
