Huskie Hoop Time Mania Hits Malta's Wright Elementary, School Changes Nickname To Huskies

MALTA, IL -Huskie Hoop Time invaded Wright Elementary School in Malta, IL, on Tuesday, as Northern Illinois University men's basketball coach Rob Judson, assistant coach Donald Whiteside, sophomore center James Hughes and NIU mascot Victor E. Huskie visited the new grade school to celebrate its mascot change to the Huskies.

Wright Elementary School is just three months into its initial school year and already has a student population of more than 260 children ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade. The children voted on their new mascot on Nov. 2 (Election Day) and chose the moniker "Huskies" by an overwhelming margin.

In addition to the mascot celebration, Hughes talked to the students about the importance of education and "doing the right thing". Hughes also spoke about the team's "Cram the Convo" on Nov. 24 against Southwest Missouri State. "Cram the Convo" is scheduled for the Wednesday (Nov. 24) before Thanksgiving at 7:05 p.m. and will be NIU's version of $1 Night. In addition to $1 tickets, the Convocation Center Concession Stands will be selling $1 hotdogs, $1 sodas and $1 popcorn.

"It was great to go into Wright Elementary and talk to the kids about the importance of education and 'doing the right things' everyday in life," Judson said. "We appreciated the opportunity and enjoyed talking to the school about Huskie Hoop Time."

Northern Illinois opened its exhibition season on Monday (Nov. 8) against Illinois Institute of Technology and grabbed a 101-51 win, with Hughes leading the Huskies with 15 points.
