Darrell Bowie Added to NIU Men's Basketball Signing Class

Nov. 21, 2011

DEKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois men’s basketball head coach Mark Montgomery announced the addition of Darrell Bowie to the program’s recruiting class of 2012. Bowie becomes the fourth member of the class of 2012, joining Daveon “Petey” Balls, Mike Davis and Sam Mader.

“Darrell is a versatile wing player,” Montgomery said. “He can play multiple positions and is very athletic, slasher. He is a good defensive player and a good rebounder. Darrell comes from a good high school and he is now at a prep school in California. He is a good student and he played AAU with the Mean Streets program.

Bowie is a 6-foot-6, 200-pound wing from Wauwatosa, Wis. Last season at Wautwatosa East High School, Bowie averaged 12.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while earning first team all-conference recognition in the Greater Metro Conference. Bowie was also an honorable mention all-area selection by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and was named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 2 All-State team. This year Bowie will attend La Jolla Prep in San Diego, Calif., he also received interest from Northwestern, Washington State and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

“This recruiting class has versatility,” Montgomery said. “We have a jet-quick point guard in Daveon “Petey” Balls who can break down a defense and make players better. Mike Davis is a scorer with a strong body and that can score in various ways. Darrell is a three; slasher-type that can play some four and Sam Mader can bang inside but also extend out to three-point range. It’s a good class to follow our last class, a good mixture of kids from different areas of the Midwest and it is going to be exciting to come see these guys help turn this program around.”

Montgomery and the 2011-12 Huskies will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 26, when they travel to Boise State. Tip time against the Broncos is slated for 8 p.m. CT.
